If you want to enjoy a slice of Americana sweeter than a funnel cake covered in powdered sugar, take a trip to Abilene, Kansas for the Central Kansas Free Fair. It had been nearly two decades since I was last in Abilene for the fair and it was just as cute as I remember.
Fair weekend kicks off with the whole town practically shutting down for the big parade. From rodeo queens to the high school football team to a countless number of John Deere trucks, the parade showcases the best of nearly every business and organization around town.
In the evening, we got our cowboy fix at the Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo and watched bull riding, lassoing, barrel racing, and other events. Yee-Haw. Although I live in Texas, you don't get this kind of stuff in the Big D. Later on, I checked out the livestock (chickens, rabbits, cows, sheep, pigs, horses, and more, oh my!) and learned all about the animals from the friendly 4-H kids showing off their blue ribbons.
To top off a big night in the small town, we headed to bright lights of the carnival and enjoyed sweet treats while watching the kiddos enjoy the rides.
