Happy Birthday, Mom! — Old-Fashioned Cinnamon Rolls

Cinnamon Roll from Mahaley's Cafe in Fredericksburg, Texas

Today I'm here to wish a very happy birthday to one of my most faithful readers, my mother. One of the tastiest treats from her oven has to be Old-Fashioned Cinnamon Rolls. They are simply heavenly. Maybe it's because she adds extra sugar and spice? Of course it is. The original recipe below is from Fleishmann's Yeast, but please adhere to her special notes for ultimate sweetness: "Double the amount of sugar and cinnamon in filling. Omit the almonds and add pecans. For the frosting, use 3/4 box powdered sugar and mix with 1/2 cup milk and 2 tablespoons butter heated in a microwave."

Enjoy!

Old-Fashioned Cinnamon Rolls

For dough:

3/4 cup milk
3 tablespoons water
1 large egg
1/4 cup butter or margarine, cut up
3/4 teaspoon salt
3 1/3 cups bread flour
3 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons Bread Machine Yeast

For filing and topping:
1/2 cup coarsely chopped almonds, toasted (or chopped pecans or walnuts)
1/4 cup sugar
1 1/4 teaspoons ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened

Glaze (see recipe below)

Instructions:
Add dough ingredients to the bread machine pan in the order suggested by the manufacturer. Select the dough/manual cycle. When cycle is complete, remove dough from machine to a lightly floured surface. If necessary, knead in enough flour to make dough easy to handle. If dough is too elastic, cover and let rest for 10 minutes before shaping.

For filling;
Stir together almonds (or other chopped nuts of your choice), the 3 tablespoons sugar (1/4 cup for 1 1/2-pound dough recipe), and cinnamon.

Divide dough in half. Roll half of dough into a 9 x 8-inch rectangle. Spread with 1 tablespoon softened butter. Sprinkle with half of the filling mixture. Beginning at long end, roll up tightly as for jelly roll. Pinch seam to seal. With sharp knife, cut into 6 equal slices. Repeat with remaining dough, butter, and filling. Place all the rolls, cut sides up, into one greased 9 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan.

Cover dough and let rise in a warm, draft-free place until almost doubled in size, 20 to 30 minutes. Bake rolls at 350 degrees F (180 C) for 25 to 30 minutes or until done. Cool slightly; remove from pan. Drizzle glaze over warm rolls. Serve warm.

For glaze:
(for either size recipe)
Combine 1/2 cup sifted powdered sugar, 1/4 teaspoon vanilla, and enough milk (2 to 3 teaspoons) to make glaze of drizzling consistency.

Makes 12 rolls.

Belgian Beer

In preparation for our upcoming Europe trip, I got acquainted with some new-to-me beers by having a Belgian Beer Flight at The Meddlesome Moth this weekend.  The darkest beer, St. Bernardus Abt 12, and the lightest, Blanche de Bruxelles, were my two favorites. Considering that Belgium has approximately one million different types of beers, I'm sure I'll find something there that suits me just fine. It's always good to do your research beforehand though, right? Do you have any favorite Belgian beers? I might as well take recommendations for favorite waffles and chocolate while I'm at it.

If you're wondering what those slabs of meat on a stick are, they are Bacon Lollipops. They are served on top of a funnel cake with a to-die-for hollandaise sauce.

YUM — BBQ Chicken Pizza

My husband and I used to eat a lot of frozen pizzas. Before we got married it was pretty much an unspoken rule that every Sunday night we'd enjoy one together before watching our TV shows.  My favorite pizza nights were the ones when we'd pop in a California Pizza Kitchen BBQ Chicken Pizza. I can't remember the last time we had it so tonight I made my own BBQ Chicken Pizza.  It only took me six ingredients to make such a delicious pizza pie: a pre-made crust, Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce, chicken, green onion, red onion, and cheese. The next time I make it I'll probably throw on some Roma tomatoes. If you're in Dallas, you need to try the BBQ Chicken Pizza at State & Allen. It is so yummy!

Tuesday Tunes — Austin City Limits Line-Up

Although the Austin City Limits music festival isn't until October, I was still excited to see the recently released killer line-up of bands for the three day music festival. I've lived in Texas for half a dozen years but have yet to make it down to Austin for ACL but it's near the top of my Texas Bucket List*!

I've recently become a fan of Gotye. After watching his performance with Kimbra on Saturday Night Live a few weeks ago, I've been in a completely euphoric, wannabe-hipster trance whenever I hear the song "Somebody That I Used To Know." While the lyrics are slightly depressing, the song is truly beautiful, and receives bonus points from me for incorporating a xylophone.

My short list of favorites for ACL this year include Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Black Keys, Florence + The Machine, Weezer, M83, and Esperanza Spalding. I also love the song "Marathon" by Tennis and I'm intrigued by Zola Jesus. I hope that I can possibly make it down there this year. Who wants to go with me?

* Thanks to friend Kathleen for this idea!

Monday Motivation — Pretty Penmanship

Do you have good handwriting? My monkey tail D'Nealian print is almost spot on to what I learned in grade school but my cursive has always been kind of all over the place. My go-to method for writing is basically a hybrid combination of both print and cursive. For whatever reason,  my penmanship has really slipped over the years. I think it's mostly due to the fact that I often find myself rushing when I write.

There are many people who would say that handwriting is a lost art in the digital age. This is really sad to me because I truly enjoy writing with a pen on paper. I want to stop being so lazy with my penmanship. A mini-resolution to improve my handwriting was inspired by the story of a seventh grader in Texas who recently won first place for her perfect loops and slants at the 21st annual National Handwriting Contest

Her story made me remember a handwriting award one of my seventh grade teachers gave to me in middle school. I can't help but think she'd be slightly disappointed in my print now. With a more concerted effort to slow down, I'm going to try to kick it up a notch with my day-to-day jottings.

Pool Time

There's been several pool-worthy weekend days in Dallas recently, but today is the first day this spring that I have some time to take advantage of it. I'm in serious need some of some sunshine. Off to the pool!

YUM — Avocado Mac and Cheese

Ever since I saw this recipe for Stovetop Avocado Mac and Cheese, I could not get it off my mind. Since we found some perfect avocados at the grocery store last weekend, I jumped on the opportunity to make it for dinner. Macaroni, pepper jack cheese, avocado, and a healthy dose of cilantro easily made it one of my new favorites.  The original recipe from two peas & their pod calls for more cheese than I thought necessary so I cut back on that. Too much cheese? I never thought I'd say that. You could probably do just one tablespoon of butter to skinny it up even more.

Thakoon for NARS

These super vibrant colors from Thakoon for NARS Spring 2012 collection are making my soon-to-be poolside toesies absolutely giddy with delight. I don't know which is more difficult, picking out my favorite color or pronouncing the names of these Indian-inspired colors.

The Bride's Bouquet

It's quite a labor of love when a bride puts together her own wedding flowers. Kelli, my friend and avid Cirque du Sweet commenter, could not have been more relaxed on her wedding day while she talked with her family and friends in her suite at the regal Adolphus Hotel, sipped mimosas, and put together her beautiful pink and cream rose bouquets.

The pinks and greens in these pictures made them my favorites from the wedding. Doesn't she look so adorable in her robe? It's from The Webster at Target and it looked so comfy.

Congrats, Kelli and Andrew! It was a truly beautiful day and we were honored to be a part of it.

Sensible Shoes

"If you wear white tennis shoes in Europe, they locals l know you are an American tourist."

I heard that from someone before my first trip across the pond when I was a 12 -year-old. As if fanny packs and cameras didn't give it away either. You can be sure though that my comfortable tourist walking shoes have definitely never been white.

My husband and I are headed to Europe this summer (his first time!) so we'll undoubtedly being doing tons of walking to see all of the sites. I have no desire pull a Gloria at Disneyland from this week's episode of Modern Family. I'll cry like a baby if my shoes aren't comfortable, but I still want them to be somewhat cute.

Here's a few neutral options that will go with everything. Let me know which pair is your favorite.

I Like My Sugar With Coffee and Cream

Hey Ladies. It was a sad day in the music world last week when Beastie Boys rapper Adam 'MCA' Yauch passed away after a battle with cancer. Beastie Boys catchy beats and rhymes have long been a staple in my music mix. The first song I remember hearing was "Brass Monkey" and I remember thinking that the term "funky monkey" was absolutely hilarious. I wasn't quite sure what to make of the Beastie Boys then, but I knew I liked them. Songs like "(You GottaFight for Your Right (to Party!)", "No Sleep Till Brooklyn", and "Girls" all seemed so silly, but yet completely awesome. My eventual favorites became workout music staples like "Sabotage", "Intergalactic", and most recently, "Make Some Noise." If you haven't watched a good music video lately (honestly, who still watches them?), watch "Make Some Noise" for some some funny cameos. Rest in peace, MCA.

You Are Such a Cool Cat

I'm not much of a cat person. I blame it all on the crazy cat lady stereotype that was formed by the time I was five years old.

Growing up, there was a legitimate cat lady on my street who provided residence to a clowder of cats. I'm sure she was a nice woman, but she reminded me a bit of Miss Gulch from The Wizard of Oz. Since then, I've been a bit skeptical of cat people.

Recently, that's changed. I find myself aww-ing over not only the cute pups at adoption events, but the little kitties as well. This probably has to do because of the influence of my friend Jill who has completely defied the stereotype of a crazy cat person. She's made me realize that there are actually some cool cat people out there. Happy Birthday, Jill - you are such a cool cat

May Day with Florence and The Machine

If there's one person who perfectly embodies the May Day spirit, it's Florence Welch of Florence and The Machine. Her ethereal voice combined with her flower child grace make her practically the poster child for a modern May Day. I'm so lucky that I get to go to her sold out show in Dallas tonight with my girlfriends. I know that I'll be blown away by my long list of favorites, but especially "Shake It Out" and of course, "Dog Days Are Over."  Both of those songs happen to be quite fitting for the first day of May, which marks the last month of the school year. Happy May Day!
